Al Ain hold off Al Ittihad to stay top
Defending United Arab Emirates league champions Al Ain moved a step closer to winning their fourth championship in six seasons as they edged struggling Al Ittihad 1-0 on Saturday to hold on to a narrow one-point lead over Al Wahda at the top of the standings.
A solitary goal by Ivory Coast import Abu Bakr Sanogo proved to be the difference as Bruno Metsu's side remained leaders with just two matches remaining in the season, reports the Gulf News.
Sanogo struck in the 57th minute, latching on to a header by substitute Mohammed Omer and firing home a powerful shot off the left upright.
Al Wahda maintained their pursuit of the leaders with a 2-1 win at Al Shaab as Yasir Salim scored the winning goal from the penalty spot 10 minutes from time.
With Al Ain facing a difficult trip to Al Jazira for their penultimate match, Al Wahda could still overhaul the leaders with a win over last-placed Dhafra.
Al Nasr moved above Al Shaab into third spot with a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Dubai, while a late goal by Hussain Suhail helped Al Jazira to earn a 1-1 draw at Al Ahli.
Sharjah eased their relegation fears with a 1-0 win over Al Wasl, while Al Shabab remained in trouble after only managing a 1-1 draw at Dhafra.
